'How do I get rid of it?': Instagram users slam new repost button, want it removed after accidental clicks

Instagram's latest feature, a 'Repost button', is currently facing a major backlash from users, with many calling it unnecessary and disruptive to the platform's original aesthetic. As the update rolls out, netizens have taken to the social media platform Reddit to voice their frustration, with widespread discussions emerging on how to disable or remove it.

On Wednesday, Instagram officially launched a reposting feature that offers users a chance to publicise Reels and feed posts directly to their own followers, with a credit given to the original creators. According to reports, this was one of the most-awaited updates to help users engage with and reshare their content within the platform itself.

According to Meta, users can now use options like Reposts, the map and the Friends tab in Reels, which would make it easier for friends to stay in touch.



So far, the users on Instagram have only been able to share other users' posts via Stories or direct messages. But with the launch of the new feature, now users can reshare any public Reel or feed post to their followers' main feed just by making it visible like their own content.

• Step 1: Tap the repost icon (the two arrows forming a square) under the content.
• Step 2: Now users will be prompted to add an optional note, a short comment or context for your repost.
• Step 3: Once it is confirmed, the content appears in the followers' feed and their profile's reposts tab.

However, the new feature seems not to have sat well with users, who discuss the ways to remove the button.


With the launch of the feature, netizens are actively sharing tips and workarounds online in a bid to remove or disable Instagram’s controversial new 'Repost' button. Also, the new feature is receiving a major backlash on the internet.

One user on Reddit shared on a thread with a title, 'Can I get rid of this new repost button??': "They be adding the most unnecessary shit lmao; soon there won't be any content to watch because the whole screen will be filled with useless UI."


Another added, "I think Instagram’s main focus is improving UI to give more creators reach. They want to attract more creators because that's how they make money."

"I love how meaningless the word 'creator' has become. "Content creator" is straight up pejorative. Just totally disposable, ephemeral, forgettable," one commented on the creator perspective.

"These companies seem to intentionally ruin the user experience in their apps. They add something like this that nobody asked for. It would be one thing if it asked you to confirm. But it immediately reposts when you accidentally hit it. I’m glad you can hit undo, but this is straight up dumb. They won’t add a way to turn it off, either. It gets them more activity whether it’s intentional or accidental. Reminds me of Twitter/X forcing you to move to the next video after you watch one in full screen. Fucking stupid and not user friendly, but it’s fake engagement for them."
