Donald Trump continues his pivot against Russia by cracking down on the country's economic partners. GOP Senator Lindsay Graham went on Fox News to threaten India, China and Brazil with severe tariffs if they kept trading in Russian oil.
Donald Trump and the GOP’s pivot against Russia in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war continues with Republican party senator Lindsay Graham playing hardball with India and China over their ties to Russia.
Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war escalated with a full-scale invasion order by Vladimir Putin in February 2022, India and China have faced increased scrutiny for retaining their economic ties to Russia, thus impeding America and Europe’s attempts to financially cripple the country.
Speaking to Fox News, Lindsay Graham had this to say: "Here's what I would tell China, India and Brazil: If you keep buying cheap Russian oil to allow this war to continue, we're going to tear up the hell out of you, and we're going to crush your economy."
Donald Trump has been continuing his gradual, but notable sharp pivot against Russia in recent weeks and months. While his early months as president had him go harder on Ukraine and the country’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump has begun losing patience with Russian president Vladimir Putin as well recently, with him explicitly stating he was “not happy” about Putin’s actions when meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Lindsay Graham has been a United States Congressman since 1994, when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He was elected to the Senate in 2002. Over the years, Graham has developed a reputation for being among the more hawkish and aggressive United States Senators currently in office, so his belligerence in and of itself is not surprising.
It is notable, however, that Graham’s harsh rhetoric concerns Russia’s war with Ukraine, signifying that Donald Trump wants to increase the pressure on Vladimir Putin to reach a deal and end the war as soon as possible.
Despite Donald Trump blaming Joe Biden for the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war, the current president’s own policies have so far failed to bring an end to the conflict. Trump’s detractors have accused him of being weak on the issue, or in more extreme cases, a useful idiot serving Vladimir Putin’s agenda.
