What is the 'Lazy Jennie' trend? BLACKPINK star's 'just standing and not dancing' move goes viral on social media

With its DEADLINE tour, BLACKPINK made a spectacular comeback to the American stage. Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa had sold-out performances and enthralling individual appearances, which brought the group back into the public eye. However, fame comes with constant scrutiny, and Jennie appears to be surrounded by controversy at every turn.

Everything Jennie does is scrutinized, from her clothes to the people she's seen with and how she moves on stage. So when she unexpectedly stopped dancing in the middle of a group routine, the internet was quick to catch on. The moment brought back the dreaded label "Lazy Jennie" and it now turned into a viral meme.


The phrase is used to describe the long-standing critique of Jennie Kim, which claims that she lacks effort or vitality when performing live, especially when performing in a group. The allegations initially gained traction after her Coachella solo performance and reappeared during the BORN PINK World Tour, when several fans noted that her movements seemed notably less dynamic than those of her other bandmates.


In earlier interviews, Jennie has responded to the criticism by saying she has learnt to put her health first. She acknowledged that her early training had not adequately prepared her for the physical demands of constant traveling, particularly with regard to injury and stamina management. She also disclosed that she frequently has severe discomfort when performing in heels, which has affected her capacity to regularly give intense performances.

However, many have noted a striking contrast: she seems to be much less energetic when performing in a group setting, yet her energy levels tend to rise during solo performances. Fans have stressed that they don't need Jennie to always give her all; all they want is for her to seem more involved, especially during group stages.



The criticism has now escalated into a viral phenomenon. People are making parodies on social media, particularly on TikTok, by dividing themselves into four characters and dancing to the new song by BLACKPINK, Jump. Similar to Jennie's notorious moment, one "member" in these vidoes just stops dancing in the middle of the performance.

Some of the captions are brutally direct. One user wrote, "You spend a bunch of money to see BLACKPINK and Jennie is putting in 5%." Another simply posted, "POV: You're Jennie at a concert," alongside a clip of someone standing still while music blares in the background.





Whether it's harsh criticism, dark humour, or just a viral parody, one thing is clear - the "Lazy Jennie" discourse isn't going away anytime soon.


BLACKPINK's tour, which spans 16 cities, began in South Korea and has already made waves in the United States. The group is currently in Canada, set to perform at Rogers Stadium in Toronto on July 22 and 23. From there, they'll head back to the U.S. before continuing on to France and other international destinations. The tour will wrap up in Hong Kong on January 24.
