Valentine's Day has deep roots in ancient Roman traditions.
One of its earliest influences was the festival of Lupercalia, celebrated annually from February 13 to 15.
This festival was meant to promote fertility, and it involved unusual and bizarre rituals—men would sacrifice animals and use their hides, dipped in blood, to symbolically "bless" women, believing it would increase their fertility.
Another part of the festival included a matchmaking draw, where men randomly picked the names of women to be paired with as potential partners.
By the late 5th century, Pope Gelasius I put an official end to Lupercalia, replacing it with a day to honor Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr.
According to legend, Valentine was a priest who secretly performed marriages for young couples after Emperor Claudius II banned soldiers from marrying, believing single men made better warriors.
When Valentine was discovered, he was imprisoned and later executed on February 14 in 269 AD.
It is said that before his death, he wrote a heartfelt note to a young girl, signing it "From Your Valentine," a phrase still widely used today.
