In one of the darkest chapters of rock history, Ozzy Osbourne, fuelled by addiction, tried to strangle his wife Sharon in 1989. The horrifying act, recalled with chilling calmness by Ozzy, became a turning point in his decades-long battle with substance abuse. Sharon’s survival reshaped both their lives forever.
Ozzy Osbourne’s legacy is peppered with wild stories, from biting a bat to headlining stadiums, but one of the most haunting moments of his life is also one of the least talked about. In 1989, at the height of his addiction, the Prince of Darkness attempted to kill his wife, Sharon Osbourne, in a moment he later described as “peaceful.”
The moment was anything but peaceful for Sharon. She had just tucked in their children, Aimee, Jack and Kelly, when Ozzy, deeply intoxicated, walked into the room and calmly told her, “We’ve come to a decision that you’ve got to die,” before lunging at her. Sharon hit the panic button in time, and the police arrived before the unthinkable could happen.
When Ozzy regained consciousness in a jail cell, he reportedly asked an officer why he was there. The reply? “You’ve been arrested for the attempted murder of Sharon Osbourne.”
This was not a one-off breakdown. Ozzy’s relationship with drugs and alcohol stretched back to his youth in Birmingham. As fame consumed him in the late ’60s and ’70s, so did addiction, escalating from alcohol to LSD and cocaine.
Even after this life-altering incident, sobriety did not come easy. He spoke openly in interviews about terrifying blackouts, lost memories, and shame. It took years, multiple rehab stays, and Alcoholics Anonymous to begin the healing.
Despite relapses, including consuming 28 gallons of alcohol one Christmas and experimenting with ketamine under supervision, Ozzy stayed largely sober from the 2010s onward. He credited Sharon, his children, and an eventual internal shift for his ongoing recovery.
Sharon, who endured both emotional and physical trauma, stood by him, even as their children also battled addiction. The family eventually emerged stronger, having confronted generations of pain together.
Ozzy Osbourne passed away on 22 July 2025, but the shadow of that night in 1989 remains a harrowing reminder of how deeply addiction can fracture lives, and how redemption is a lifelong battle.
