Officials in Bihar seized an oil tanker carrying 200 boxes of beer, which smugglers abandoned after a police chase. The tanker, registered in Nagaland, was apprehended in Muzaffarpur. Smugglers frequently use creative methods to smuggle alcohol into Bihar due to the state's liquor ban.
An oil tanker carrying booze was discovered in Bihar, officials reported on Wednesday. Approximately 200 beer boxes were discovered in the Hindustan petroleum truck and sent to the excise police station. The Nagaland-registered tanker was apprehended in Muzaffarpur while the smugglers fled.
According to officials, the excise department received a tip about the liquor cargo and created a team to capture the traffickers. The officials set up a road barricade, prompting the traffickers to turn the tanker into a national route.
"After being chased, the driver and the liquor trader abandoned the tanker on the national highway and fled," said Assistant Excise Commissioner Vijay Shekhar Dubey.
The seized liquor was manufactured in Arunachal Pradesh. The local trader who smuggled in the liquor has been identified, and operations are underway to capture him, according to the official, who also stated that a case has been filed against him.
