Shubman Gill, calm and composed, etched his name into cricketing history with his maiden double century - only to become the third Indian ever to do so on English soil. The landmark came off a loose delivery down leg, which Gill gently helped to fine leg and it was all just raw emotions. From the balcony, the Indian team rose in applause, clapping for their captain who had led from the front.

He punched the air, removed his helmet, and dropped to one knee. A fist pump followed, and a wide, knowing smile spread across his face. Then came the now-iconic bow - his signature gesture of respect to the game and to the crowd. Raising his bat, he closed his eyes to fully absorb the moment.

Historic numbers by Shubman Gill

This wasn't just a milestone - it was a statement. Gill, in only his early days as captain, has embraced leadership with remarkable grace and grit.

This is only the second time an Indian captain has scored a double hundred in an overseas Test - the first being Virat Kohli's 200 in North Sound (2016).

Gill joins an elite list of Indian captains with a Test double century: Virat Kohli (7), and one each for Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni - and now, Shubman Gill.

He also becomes the first Asian captain to hit a double ton in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), surpassing Tillakaratne Dilshan's 193 at Lord’s in 2011.

Fans react to this iconic moment

Seeing the captain lead from the front got netizens excited. Many, especially on X (formerly known as Twitter) even stated that he is the heir to legends like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar and just what the Indian cricket team needed.

One said, "Shubman Gill will be the biggest asset of ICT after Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. #INDvsENG."

Another said, "In the cathedral of cricket, Gill stood as a hymn 200 runs—every stroke a verse, every silence a prayer. Against England, he didn’t just bat—he composed. A Test, a testament. Shubman, the poet with a blade."

One added, "What a stunning knock by Shubman Gill at Edgbaston! First two Tests as captain, and he brings up a double ton!"
