Inspired by personal experiences with online criticism, the track addresses the backlash Trainor received while sharing her fitness and health journey. “I was seeing a lot of hate… when I started posting more pictures of my fitness and health journey,” she revealed. The negative responses initially left her disheartened, but she channelled these emotions into music, creating a narrative of confidence and resilience. The upbeat chorus, “You could tear me apart, but I sleep well at night,” highlights this unwavering self-assurance.

A nostalgic pop sound and family touches

“Still Don’t Care” features a vibrant 1980s-inspired pop production and includes contributions from Scott Hoying of Pentatonix, complemented by the background vocals from Trainor’s family. The collaboration adds a sense of warmth and authenticity, highlighting the personal touch that weaves through the album.

Toy With Me is poised to explore themes of self-love, personal struggles, and family bonds. One particular track, “Little One,” is a lullaby written for her children, Riley and Barry. Trainor shared that the song resonates deeply with her family, with her children eagerly claiming it as their own.

A demanding creative process

Creating the album proved intense, with Trainor dedicating eight months to production. The demanding schedule took a toll on her health, causing stress-induced physical symptoms, including a burning sensation in her tongue. Unlike her previous albums, where songs often came together in a single day, this project required months of refining, driven by collaborations with new songwriters that pushed her creative boundaries.

Exciting tour announcement

Trainor has also announced a North American tour in 2026, marking her return to the stage after a seven-year break. Openers Icona Pop will join her, promising fans a lively and dynamic performance.
