Christopher Nolan’s planned adaptation of The Odyssey is already generating buzz among cinema enthusiasts and mythology fans alike. Renowned for his bold storytelling and grand cinematic vision, Nolan aims to reimagine Homer’s timeless saga for modern audiences. From speculated casting choices and the release date to insights into the film’s anticipated style and scale, here’s what we know so far about The Odyssey.
Matt Damon was the first major star reported to be in talks for Nolan’s The Odyssey. By November, Deadline revealed that Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong’o had joined the cast, followed by news of Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, and Charlize Theron coming on board later that month. In January 2025, Jon Bernthal’s involvement was announced, along with the additions of Himesh Patel, Elliott Page, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton. Then, in February, Deadline confirmed Jesse Garcia and Will Yun Lee as the latest cast members.
Based on the classic epic, the film follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he embarks on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters formidable challenges, including Polyphemus the Cyclops, the alluring Sirens, the enchantress Circe, and the nymph Calypso, all while navigating treacherous seas that keep him from reuniting with his wife, Penelope. At home, Penelope cleverly delays choosing a new husband by unraveling her woven shroud each night, hoping for Odysseus’s return. Meanwhile, their son Telemachus protects his father’s legacy. The tale also brings to life powerful deities like Athena, Poseidon, and Zeus.
On July 2, 2025, the creators of The Odyssey revealed the film’s official poster on their X account, generating buzz among movie lovers and fans. The visually captivating poster depicts a majestic Greek statue, aged and worn by time, standing quietly against a backdrop of swirling ash and shadows.
Zendaya and Tom Holland are all set to reunite in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film. While official confirmation is still pending about the role, Zendaya is expected to take on the role of Athena, the goddess famed for her wisdom. Holland, on the other hand, is believed to be cast as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. The pair, who previously captivated audiences with their chemistry in the Spider-Man movies, are likely to bring that same spark to The Odyssey.
Christopher Nolan is making a highly anticipated comeback to cinemas with his new project, The Odyssey. After the remarkable success of his 2023 biopic Oppenheimer, which garnered critical praise and numerous accolades, Nolan is turning his attention to adapting one of the most timeless stories from ancient literature.
